The Essential English Book Club
It’s More Than Reading
Build your English fluency and transform your speaking by discussing global books

Transform your reading, speaking, and listening skills.  This is more than a book club; it’s a laboratory designed to enhance your reading AND English speaking skills. Here, you will develop speaking confidence and expand your vocabulary through real-life discussions about global book topics. You’ll master native-level vocabulary, idioms, and pronunciation while refining your listening skills.

Better Than Private Lessons. In a private lesson, you only talk to a teacher. In the Smart Brain English Book Club, you learn to navigate real English conversations, different accents, and speaking dynamic wth your peers -- which is how English works in the real world!

Highly Effective. You will be immersed in English every day, not just once a week with a teacher.

You are in good hands. The book club is facilitated by a highly experienced, native English professor.

We make learning English easy. Learning English doesn't have to be stressful. We skip the dry literary analysis. Instead, we treat these books like a "conversation catalyst"—sharing the humor, the humanity, and the heart of the language in a group that feels like a circle of friends.

Who Moved My Cheese

An insightful memoir of an Iranian growing up in California.

Frequently Asked Questions: Essential English Book Club

What English level do I need to join? Our sessions are designed for Intermediate to Advanced speakers (B1–C2). If you can understand the gist of a podcast or a news article, you’ll fit right in! We focus on moving you from "functional" to "fluent."

What happens during the in-person sessions?

Our in-person sessions are the heart of the book club—a space for immersive, face-to-face discussions that go beyond the surface. We explore the current topic in the stress-free, social atmosphere of a local café.  It’s where you turn your language skills into real-world confidence.

What if I haven't finished reading the book? Don't worry! While finishing the book helps, our Great Books sessions are structured around themes and specific excerpts. You’ll still be able to contribute to the conversation and learn from the group's insights.

Will I be able keep up with the discussions?  Yes! definitely. Discussions focus on natural speaking levels. By practicing English in real time and "thinking in English," most members report seeing a boost in their speaking and confidence within 5 to 10 weeks of consistent attendance and participation.

Are Sessions Recorded: To protect our members' privacy and encourage a "safe space" for making mistakes, we do not record live sessions. However, we provide Session Summaries and vocabulary lists after every meeting.
